Safe Homemade Care Basics (And What Not to DIY)

Simple saline-style comfort ideas and cleaner swaps — plus a clear list of recipes we will not recommend.

Safety notes

  • Do not make homemade infant formula.
  • Do not use essential oils on or near infants without clinician guidance.
  • Do not put honey on anything for babies under 1 year.
  • Patch-test any skin mixture; prefer plain water or clinician-approved products for newborns.

Some DIY care is about simplifying — not inventing medicine.

Generally softer DIY-adjacent ideas

Plain water + soft cloth for newborn bottoms at home; oatmeal bath for older kids if your clinician is fine with it; fragrance-free castile soap diluted for surfaces (not for eyes, and rinse toys well).

Do not DIY

Infant formula, teething gels, fever 'cures,' ear oils for infections, or strong herbal syrups for babies. Those belong with professionals.

When skin is angry

Persistent rashes need a pediatric visit — cream from the store your clinician likes beats a complicated kitchen blend.
