Best First Foods & Vegetables by Age: A Calm Starter Map
From single-ingredient purées to toddler plates — nutrient-dense, often organic-friendly options without overwhelm.
· 10 min
SaveStarting solids is exciting and messy. Think of this as a friendly map, not a rigid curriculum. Always follow your pediatrician's advice on readiness and allergens.
Around 6 months (when ready)
Signs of readiness often include sitting with support, good head control, and interest in food. Iron-rich foods matter: soft meats, lentils, fortified cereals, or mashed beans as advised. Soft avocado, sweet potato, banana, and pear are popular gentle starts. Introduce one new food at a time if that helps you spot reactions.
6–12 months
Move toward thicker textures and soft finger foods. Steamed broccoli florets (well-cooked), soft carrot sticks, zucchini, and peas mashed or smashed work well. Offer water in an open or straw cup as recommended. Continue breast milk or formula as the main nutrition source in this window unless told otherwise.
1–3 years
Family foods, cut safely. Colorful plates: leafy greens finely chopped, roasted root veggies, berries, yogurt (plain), eggs, and whole grains. Limit added sugar. Involve toddlers in rinsing produce — it builds buy-in.
3–5 years
Keep offering variety without pressure. Kids this age often go through food jags. Keep organic berries, snap peas, cucumber, and hummus within reach. Model joyful eating rather than negotiating every bite.
Organic when it helps your budget
If you prioritize, many families start with the “dirty dozen” style lists for produce they eat often. Frozen organic veggies are budget-friendly and nutritious. This is preference and values — not a judgment on parents using conventional produce.
