Teething can turn sweet evenings into long nights. The good news: many babies respond to simple, low-tech comfort — and you do not need a cabinet full of gadgets.

Cool and clean pressure

Chilled (not frozen-solid) teething rings or a clean damp washcloth from the fridge can ease gum pressure. Always supervise. Avoid liquid-filled toys that can leak or break.

Finger massage (with clean hands)

A gentle circular rub along the gum line with a clean finger can distract and soothe. Wash hands well first.

Extra cuddles and predictable wind-downs

Teething often peaks at night. A slightly earlier bedtime routine, dim lights, and more holding can reduce overwhelm for both of you.

What many pediatricians advise skipping

Amber teething necklaces (choking and strangulation risk), numbing gels with benzocaine for young children (unless specifically directed), and unverified “miracle” powders. Always ask your clinician before using any oral gel or homeopathic product.

When teething is not the whole story

High fever, rash, diarrhea lasting more than a day or two, or extreme irritability may not be “just teething.” Check in with your pediatrician when symptoms feel bigger than gum discomfort.
